Final Lead Story PHOTO
I arranged for a group of girls from school to meet me in the local park to get this photo for my front page. I took a few using different framing techniques and this is the one i've chosen to use. The lighting is good and everyone looks natural so it's the kind of picture that fit with the 'local girls' story and would appeal to my target audience. I now need to place this photo on my front page and then my paper is complete.

BY Radio Advert
BY FINAL Magazine Recording by oliviaboard
This is the first draft of my radio advert. I used an mp3 convertor online to source the music and recorded the script using Garageband, an external mic and a mixing desk. I didn't realise how loud the music was until I uploaded it. I now need to adjust the levels and make the voice clearer.

Radio Advertising research
It was really hard to find examples of radio adverts for newspapers but I did find one for the Observer newspaper on the RAB Hall of Fame 2005 web page. The link to the advert is below:
All the adverts I listened to on this sites are very creative in how they use dialogue and sound to engage the audience. I think I will still use music and a script for my advert because to make something like these adverts would take more time than I have left.

Newspaper advertising
I was researching radio adverts for newspapers and came across this great advert from the Sun. It's a parody of the iPhone advert and has the message that traditional is best. It probably picks on the iPhone for trying to be too clever with it's advertising. This would make the Sun's audience laugh.

Final Poster (almost)
This is my new poster. I've added in the images and came up with the idea of having the contents repeat in different colours in the background. i tried to use an online programme called Wordle to do this for me first but I didn't like the results so did it myself and lowered the opacity so it didn't clash with the main text. Probably need to add something else to the right side - maybe my main story photo?
Newspaper (almost) final draft
This is what my paper looks like at the end of a lot of effort today. I've edited the story on the second page, I've made a new weather forecast in PS, re-worked the asos advert, moved the nails advert and I've added a 'contact us' area which is conventional on a second page of a local paper. I decided to change the title design too after working on my poster. When I designed the poster I thought it would look good to have the images of Louisa and George on there too. I've changed the date style too and added a website. I have the photo for the main image now but have run out of time today to add it in. A job for tomorrow.

Second Page update
I changed the Anorexia story on my second page, focusing on a young male model, rather than a female. This way I show the female story on the front and the male page on page 2. now the paper represents both genders as i had set out to do in my brief. the story still doesn't fit properly so I still have some editing to do.
First Page update
I've had some more time to make the changes from my audience feedback and even though I'm still not finished - i think this version is much better. Changing the plug area has really worked to add colour and interest and changing the advert has had positive feedback from my friends who are the target audience. I've also moved the lead story around and changed the headline, I have used alliteration to make it more attention grabbing and i took a long time to get the placement of the text just right to fit. now I need to to find time to develop the title a bit more and work on page two.

Audience Feedback
This is my newspaper and the comments that were left on it. The main things I need to do now are:
1. Completely remove the advert as it was seen 'not suitable for the age group for my newspaper'. I will change the advert to horoscopes as this is a popular topic that young people like to read about.
2. The main image was also a major concern for my paper as it wasn't taken specifically for my main story, this therefore led me to lose vital marks. I will take a new photo using a digital SLR camera and I need to think carefully about the mise-en-scene and framing of the shot.
3. The other issue I have with my newspaper is that there are too many gaps. I need to work on making it appear more full and interesting.

Photography for poster
I took a photo of Louisa against the green screen so I was able to edit it in photoshop and apply it to my poster, my idea was that she could lean against the 'Y' on my poster.
I chose Louisa to stand against the 'Y' as the pink letter represents the female gender, this shows that my newspaper is for both genders. Louisa looks relaxed and this send out the right message about my paper. I think the lighting I used works well here too.
This image of George is placed on the 'B' on my poster, he is representing the male part of my newspaper. The colour of the 'B' is blue and is for masculinity. I also used the green screen to take my photograph and used the quick selection tool in the toolbar on photoshop to cut out the background neatly.

Poster development
This is my poster now. I changed the design as the black arrows that I used before do not look as eye catching as the multicoloured boxes. I have taken the colours from the 'B' and the 'Y' that makes the design more professional and not childish or too complicated. I have taken some photographs to add to this to represent the target audience.

poster research
This is the poster for the Metro newspaper, I feel as if I should include this in my research as I have followed the Metro as a whole product and brand.
The poster uses childlike writing and effect by using a toy that would be found at the arcade. The professional metro sign in the bottom right hand corner brings the meaning back of what the poster is about.
This is the poster for The Sun newspaper, I found this poster really interesting as it doesn' t follow normal conventions for a poster, it is outstanding and eye catching compared to others. The long list of articles isn't boring as it is placed in a design like a reciept.
The prices of the newspaper is placed at the bottom and all the details needed are given in a simple design.
The Guardian newspaper's poster was one of the most attractive newspaper poster that I noticed. I like the use of words and colour, these immediatley attract the audience. This outlines my newspaper slightly as the male and female colour scheme can be related too, the use of blues and greens on the 'opinion' and the more female colours of pinks and reds on the word 'fact'.

Front Page Development
My first page of my newspaper consists of a four column layout with a plug, adverts, the date and how much the newspaper costs, these are all vital on a newspaper aswell as the main story. My main story features a girlband that have recently been noticed after performing on a reality show auditions. I chose to include this story so that young people are recognised for positive things that they are able to achieve as youths are usually in the news for gang culture or something downgrading. I feel as if a success story would inspire more youths to relate to this. The bottom of my page shows an advert that I designed myself on Photoshop, this benefits me and my newspaper as my IT skills are shown more and the advertisement of new drivers is a common thing found in young peoples magazines and newspapers. Feedback on this front page has been that the 'plug' area looks amateur and need work. My audience also said that the lead story headline is too complicated and doesn't fill the space properly. My teacher has also advised me to get a new photograph for the main story as i'll lose marks for not taking an image for the story. I thought the photograph I already had would be OK but apparently not. I think i'll still change the bottom advert too - looks too childish.
Page 2 development
This is my final design for my second page of my newspaper. I realised I needed to add small details like the bar at the top of the page, the page number and the name of the paper. At the bottom of the page I included adverts of Jessica Nails the nail polish brand that is well known, and also ASOS which is a unisex clothes shop online. I chose this as it represents both genders as the whole of my newspaper is. I chose my font as Arial Black for the headline and story as this is a suitable font for the seriousness of my story that outlines the underlying issue of anorexia, mostly in teens. A weather forecast is also a common feature used in newspapers on the second page. I feel my layout is still developing as feedback has been that the stories don't actually represent both male and female and it was commented that the weather and the asos advert look like they haven't had enough time spent on them. I'll need to change the anorexia story to how it has affected a male and I need to work on the other feedback comments.

Newspaper Design Front Page
My first page of my newspaper will use a four column layout that will attract my audience with an attention grabbing headline of a girl band that have recently been developed. My main image will be of the girlband that i have focused my story on.
My title of my newspaper is 'BY' this stands for Bexley Youth. I will use a blue and pink colour scheme that will relate to a mixed gender audience.
My advert at the bottom of the page will be for new young drivers that are looking for an instructor, i will make it myself using photoshop that will benefit me and show my IT skills.

I've decided to put a plug at the top of the page as this is conventional and it will brighten the page. The area for the date is probably a bit big but I'll see what happens with that later.
Newspaper measurements 1st Page
We were asked to take measurements from a newspaper we liked so we could use this when designing our own papers. I measured the Metro because it had the same number of columns I wanted to use and it had a layout that would attract young people. It wasn't the most exciting thing to do today but I know it'll be useful later.
Poster Design
This is my design for my poster that I am using as one of my ancillary tasks. I'm finding it hard to come up with good ideas. I don't remember ever seeing a newspaper poster before so I'll have to do more research before I start making it in PS. I need to find a less boring way of presenting the content information.
Newspaper 2nd page design
I used a four column page layout for my newspaper, this is more appealing to my audience as young people do not like to see lots of text or complicated stories. My second page will feature adverts, publisher info and a second story of a model that has overcome anorexia. My adverts will feature a fashion store, makeup, and also weather summary. My plan is to make all the adverts myself but using images sourced on google.
Front page advert
I created this advert today for the bottom of my front page. I used google images to find the car and then the road markings. I added shadows and gradients to my text to make it stand out and appeal to the audience. I like the final result but i'm not really sure it's the best advert for such a big space across the bottom of the page. I might change it later.
First Title Design
This is my first design of my newspaper logo, it stands for Bromley youth and I used blue and pink for boys and girls to communicate the paper is for both. They are also two bright colours that will stand out and will make the newspaper appealing to young people. Some people might say it's a bit obvious having pink and blue but I want the message of target audience to get across quickly. I've created this in PhotoShop using just a text box and adding the font and a drop shadow to make it stand out. It's still a bit plain but I'll add to it later as the paper develops.
Story Research
Last week we were asked to research into possible stories for our paper and I started by searching for stories on girl bands because this is what I wanted to have on my front page. i looked at articles written about other bands before I started to write my own.

Applying the Key Concepts
Representation - My newspaper is going to represent young people in the local area of Bexleyheath. Current local papers seem to demonise young people and the only reports on what they're doing is negative. My paper aims to represent the positive things young people are doing and also to cover issues that affect them. My main story will be about a local young girl band that has been formed, this shows that there can be success within their generation. My secondary story will be about a young male model who has suffered from anorexia and is now part of a campaign to raise awareness of the dangers for young people. My newspaper will be called BY, standing for Bexley Youth.
Institution - The newspaper I am designing would probably be published by an existing newspaper group like Archant who publish the Bromley Times. It would be a good way for them to advertise to the younger people in the area as they don't usually read the local paper. It will have a tabloid layout as it is aimed at a young audience and they are more likely to pick up a newspaper with a less formal layout. A tabloid is also a suitable layout as entertainment will be featured within it. My newspaper will be free, as this will also make it more appealing to my audience. It will rely on advertising for it's funding which will be driving lesson advert, fashion stores and make up, all things that appeal to my young audience. The sample paper I produce will probably have about 30-40% advertising on the first two pages.
Values - Production Values are important to make sure I attract the target audience. As this is the first time I'm using inDesign I know it will be a challenge to create to professional standards but I will be using real products as my inspiration so I hope to end up with something believable anyway. I will be using a Mac to design my newspaper and the programmes are PhotoShop and inDesign. My newspaper will need to stand out from others so I will create a bold mast head with the date so the audience are able to see that it is a weekly paper for them. My images should be a clear and high quality that represent and appeal to the audience I am targeting. I will work to a four column layout to ensure the paper looks like it has order in the design
Audience - My newspaper is aimed at an audience ages 13-20. I do not want to be sexist or alienate any gender in my newspaper so i will use adverts and stories that will appeal to both genders. By creating my newspaper in a realist way it would appeal to my audience more as they would be able to relate to it more. My audience are probably from working and lower middle class families so I will need to keep this in mind when designing the content. they are likely to be at school or university and they will be interested in local issues and events but will be frustrated trying to find things to do. This paper will help them find out what's going on and get involved.
Language - The colour scheme and images are the first things that people notice on a newspaper whether it is the main story or an advert, and this is what communicates whether the paper is for them. My main headline will also be short and appealing that will make the audience want to read more. I will use a fairly conventional sans serif font as i want my newspaper to have a young but appealing look to teenagers. I will use a blue and pink colour scheme which is a bit stereotypical but will communicate clearly that it's for both genders. The mode of address for the paper will be fairly formal as it's not a magazine and the content is serious, even though many of the stories will be about entertainment.
Ideology - The ideology of my newspaper will be that young people want ways to get involved if only they are given the right information. I will aim to represent a positive view of young people where they are often criticised for bad things such as knife crime or gang culture. My newspaper will focus of the success of two groups of people, one starting a girl band and a successful model that has overcome the serious illness of anorexia. It will give readers an insight into what they can achieve and will give off a positive attitude. The paper will challenge the current ideology of local papers by giving young people the information they need and a way to be heard.
Narrative - Narrative is hard to apply to newspapers but through its structure, my paper will communicate that young people in the area are busy in lots of ways and successful in lots of ways. It will also communicate that young people are just as interested in 'hard news' as they are in entertainment stories. However, by placing an entertainment story as my lead on the front page it could seem that soft news comes first. My secondary story is more serious and covers and issue affecting lots of young people today. If I was to continue the paper i would include more serious stories about youth in the community and ways that the audience can get involved.
Genre - The genre of my newspaper is a local newspaper and I will be competing against other local newspapers. I intend to give it a youthful twist that appeals more to the younger generation so that could be a sub-genre of the local paper. Local papers share some conventions with national papers but they have their own style and a lot of advertising to fund the paper so i need to remember this when i;m designing it. mostly it's the content that makes it fit the 'local' genre. All the stories and most of the advertising should be local in focus.

Segmenting my Audience
- My newspaper is based around the Bexleyheath community and my target audience is the younger generation of people aged from 13 - 20. I will feature stories and adverts for males and females in my newspaper and I aim to represent both in the sample paper.
- My target audience are likely to be in education, either secondary, college or university. Their parents have probably not gone to university so they will either be working or lower middle class.
- The modern audience are complex so advertisers need complex means of categorising them. some of the factors regularly considered are now: Values, attitudes, lifestyles. The VALS system was developed by the market research and advertising industry.
- My target audiences' psychographic category is 'rebels' as these are a group of people that wish to remake the world in their image. They can also be categorised under the group of 'drop-outs' that shun commitments of any kind.
- I believe this because I think my typical reader will be bored and looking for something new in the area. They won't be happy just hanging around or going shopping, they want to experience new things, music, events and other opportunities.

Ideas For Brief
For my A2 Coursework I have chosen to create the first two pages of a newspaper. I plan to base my newspaper around youth safety and the Bromley area, this would be a successful idea as there are not many newspapers that are aimed at young people.
A newspaper is something I want to focus on as I enjoy designing and being creative, this would be a great benefit for my A2 coursework as previous challenges have not been so rewarding.
I was set a task to create a short film previously and this did not turn out as good as I planned it to be. I was working with two of my classmates and I particularly found this a hard task to complete as I was not familiar with the mac programs and my film planning was not precise. I should of included more shots into my short film and I feel that this time designing a newspaper would be a better, safer and successful piece.
For part of my planning for my newspaper, I have recently started looking into newspaper plans and how I need to set my newspaper home page and second page out. I looked at The Bromley Times newspaper, a professional local paper that will help me with my planning.
